Social Studies 1The teaching of social studies education is to prepare students for informed, active and responsible citizenship. To achieve this, citizenship education calls for knowledge and understanding of persistent or recurring social issues which requires the drawing upon knowledge from all the social studies disciplines and beyond. It also involves developing a range of skills such as information gathering and processing, map reading, critical thinking, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Students need to explore, clarify and develop values and dispositions such as commitment to the common good and justice, to social responsibility and action and develop personal qualities like self-esteem, confidence and initiative and risk taking. Skilled and competent citizenship means feeling empowered, knowing and valuing one’s potential for positive action and getting generally prepared to take a constructive and proactive approach to the issues and problems in the society.
