Aim of the Course

The Course aims to give you an opportunity to explore issues in the education of children with special needs from different perspectives:

  • the development and abilities of the child,

  • the practical approaches the teacher can use in the classroom and

  • the (micro) political climate that helps or hinders the inclusion process.

Cross-linkages are made all through the course to emphasize how these perspectives cannot be viewed in isolation. Additionally, you will learn how catering to the needs of children with special needs can improve your general teaching skills and practices.

Objectives

The objectives of this course are:

  • to gain an increased understanding of typical child development and how special needs can be understood from a developmental perspective;

  • to gain knowledge of various types of special needs;

  • to understand historical trends in the education of children with special needs;

  • to explore assessment issues and how they affect children with special needs;

  • to learn how to adapt the classroom environment, learning materials and teaching strategies in order to teach children with special needs more effectively; and

  • to explore socio-political aspects of inclusive education, within the school and the community.
